How to ace your audition
Auditions are a necessary evil so here are 9 tips to help you get that job!
1 – Be early
Make sure you are there 5 – 10 minutes before your audition. This will give you time to find out where the audition is. There is nothing worse than entering the audition late and streaming with sweat!
2 – Be prepared
If you’re given script make sure you know it inside out. Even if you’re told not to learn them…do! It’s better that you have a really good grip on the text but make sure you can adapt to the direction you are given!
3 – Know the director, company or casting director
Never go in blind. Have an idea who you are going to meet and what they have done. You don’t have to be able to quote every show they have done but show some understanding of who they are in the industry.
4 – Be yourself
In an audition the director wants to get a sense of what it would be like to work with you as well as how well you can perform. Don’t try and be who you think they want you to be. If you go in pretending to be something you are not they will see right through you and will wonder what you are hiding.
5 – Believe in yourself
You MUST believe in your ability. You have every right to be there and you have every chance of getting the job otherwise you wouldn’t have the audition in the first place! You need to be confident but not over confident, just believe in yourself!
6 – Already have the job
You need to KNOW you have the job before you walk into the audition. If you believe this fact your whole demeanour will change when you enter the room. You will be more relaxed and you will put the audition panel at ease.
7 – Be honest
Never lie in an audition, it will always come back to haunt you! If they ask you if you can ride a motorcycle, don’t say yes if you have only ever sat on a friend’s one! They may like you enough to train you but if you turn up on set unable to do a skill they expect you to do, you may not get hired again!
8 – See it as an opportunity to perform
Forget that you are in an audition. See every audition as a performance. That way you can enjoy the experience. Performance is what you do so grab the chance when you can!
9 – Trust yourself
Only you know how truly good you are so trust in your ability. Don’t second guess yourself and question everything that you do. Trust in yourself and don’t hold back and you will give a performance truly worthy of you.
