Are you ready for drama school?

Drama school maybe the holy grail you’ve been striving for but are you really ready for it?

You have auditioned, you have either been offered a place or you were unsuccessful this year but the burning question is are you really ready for what’s to come? The first year at Drama School can be a real culture shock. You will never have worked as hard as you are expected to, you will want to play as hard as you work and you will find you have no time at all!! The biggest shock you have to prepare yourself for is that everything you have every learned about acting and performing will come into question. Each Drama School has it’s own approach to creating character and more than likely they will want to ‘re-programme’ you and get you to un-learn the bad habits that you have picked up. This can be one of the most difficult aspects of all of your training as it can really make you question everything you have ever learned and you will probably want to resist the new ideas. DON’T! Embrace the new ideas and you will find that you will synthesise them into your own creative practices and you will develop as a performer.

At The Dorset School of Acting I have experienced the same resistance and it can have quite an impact on the student if they don’t embrace the new approaches and let go of the comfortable bad habits that they have developed prior to proper actor training. When the student takes on the new approach the change is huge and they become a much more truthful and believable performer. If you are unsure if Drama School is for you check out The Dorset School of Acting’s 1yr Foundation Course in Acting and Musical Theatre. The course is based on the first year of a BA (Hons) Drama School training and will really prepare you for what is to come and it prepares it’s students for all the aspects of auditioning for accredited Drama Schools. The 2 year accelerated course in Acting & Musical Theatre commences September 2015.
